Toby Pearson Inducted Into Morristown East High School Hall of Fame
Morristown, TN- Morristown East High School Athlete Director, along with Principal, Joe Ely and Hamblen County School official on January 10, 2020 inducted Toby Pearson into East High Hall of Fame. Mr. Pearson was not able to attend as he was of the county on business, but his wife, Tera Pearson, mother, Barbara Pearson and family members gather at center court to view his Hall of Fame picture and receive his plaque.
Toby Pearson is a 1983 graduate of Morristown East High School, where he had an outstanding career as a student-athlete. Pearson excelled both in the classroom and on the field. He was a member of the Beta Club his junior and senior year. He was also a Who’s Who and Honors student as a senior. He was a four year letterman of both the Hurricane basketball and football teams, and he served as captain of the football team his senior year. He has one of the most illustrious football careers to date.
Pearson’s junior season he had 42 catches for 648 yards, both of which led the conference. His senior year he had an impressive 64 catches, which at that time not only led the conference, but was an East record until 2018. He racked up 1,078 reception yards that same season, which is still the most ever received by a Morristown East player. Pearson also became the first player in Tennessee high school history to receive 1000 receiving yards. This same season he made it into the end zone nine times, which was also a Morristown East record at that time. He finished his career with 116 career catches and 1,903 yards, both of which were East records at one time, as well as 13 career touchdowns. Pearson’s talents on the field were noticed all over the state of TN and beyond.
Pearson was named to the All-State team in 1981 and 1982. He was the team MVP, named All-Conference and All- East Tennessee his junior and senior year, as well All-South his senior year. He was the IMAC Offensive player of the year, as well as the AAA State Player of the Year in 1982. He was the East Tennessee Player of the Year as voted on by the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Knoxville Journal, the Kingsport Times, the Nashville Banner, and the Memphis Commercial Appeal his senior year. Pearson was also named Honorable Mention All-American in Parade Magazine in 1982, and he was named to the Coaches Poll All-American team that same year.
Mr. Pearson went on to play football at Georgia Tech for four years. Mr. Pearson is married, and he and his wife, Tera, reside outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Pearson sends his love and thanks to the Morristown East family from the Philippines, where he for work.
