Black Excellence Awards (formerly DAPS Awards) recognized Black pastors, professionals, students and ministry from a list of candidates submitted each month by individuals, AHERN Board of Directors or AHERN Magazine Staff.

The BE Awards is a formal/black tie event held each year in different cities throughout East Tennessee.

The pastor, and professional of the month must have served in their professional at least 3 years.  Student of the month must be a high school senior, college freshman or sophomore.

Each candidates is selected on a 5 point grade scale in the following category: Community Involvement / Church Involvement / School Involvement / Organization Affiliations / Academic Achievement
